Get the Best Out of Your Home Internet
At 360Net, our goal is simple: to give Kiwis fast, reliable, and fair-priced internet backed by real support.
We’re proud to be awarded Best Value Broadband Provider of the Year 2024 & 2025 by NZ Compare, proving that performance and affordability can go hand in hand. Internet performance, however, depends on more than just your plan. Your devices, Wi-Fi environment, router type, home layout, and network setup all play a major role.
This guide explains:
- Why your internet may feel slow
- What impacts performance at device level
- How to optimise your home network
- What equipment you need to fully utilise HyperNet (Hyperfibre) speeds
- How 360Net helps you get the most out of your connection
Why Internet Performance Varies Between Homes
“My plan is fast, but my Wi-Fi feels slow.”
Common causes
- Older routers (Wi-Fi 5/6) not designed for multi-gig speeds
- Router positioned behind TV / on floor / inside cabinet
- Interference from walls, microwaves, appliances, neighbours
- Too many devices connected at once
360Net Solutions
- Wi-Fi 7 routers available for HyperNet plans, supporting multi-gig speeds (depending on device capability)
- Guidance on optimal router placement
- Mesh recommendations for complex layouts
- Live chat support to help diagnose Wi-Fi issues
“Speed test results differ across my devices.”
Why this happens
Different devices have different maximum speeds:
- Many laptops have 1Gbps Ethernet ports
- Phones/tablets vary from 100–1500 Mbps
- Wi-Fi strength varies by room
- Background updates affect results
360Net Solutions
- Device Capability Guide available
- Support team helps identify device limitations
- Clear explanation of realistic speeds over Wi-Fi
- Ethernet recommended for high-performance tasks
“I experience lag while gaming.”
Why this happens
- Wi-Fi interference
- Routing distance to overseas servers
- Background downloads
- Device Wi-Fi limitations
360Net Solutions
- Recommend Ethernet for gaming
- Wi-Fi 7 routers for improved wireless stability
- Static IP available
“My Zoom/Teams calls freeze.”
Why this happens
- Wi-Fi interference
- Upload congestion
- Device bandwidth shortages
360Net Solutions
- Higher upload plans such as Quantum Quick & HyperNet tiers
- Support advice on isolating devices during calls
- Router placement and Wi-Fi channel optimisation
“Too many devices in my home.”
Why this happens
Modern homes often have:
- 10–50+ connected devices
- 4K streaming, gaming, tablets, smart TVs, IoT devices
360Net Solutions
- Wi-Fi 7 routers designed for high device density
- Mesh options for multi-level homes
- Plan recommendations based on device count, not just speed
Speed vs Performance
What’s the Difference?
Speed = Bandwidth delivered to your ONT
Performance = How well your devices experience that speed
Performance depends on:
- Wi-Fi standard of your router
- Device hardware
- Distance from router
- Home layout
- Interference
- Usage across the household
This is the most important distinction for setting clear, compliant expectations.
Wi-Fi 7
The Ideal Match for HyperNet
Wi-Fi 7 routers are recommended because they support:
- Multi-gigabit throughput (depending on device)
- Better stability under load
- Faster handling of many devices
- More efficient channel use
360Net’s Wi-Fi 7 options::
Available for HyperNet customers choosing a 360Net-provided router, ensuring their home setup is capable of handling multi-gig speeds where supported.
HyperNet
Our Next-Generation Hyperfibre Plans
HyperNet plans provide significantly higher bandwidth to your property, ideal for::
- Large households
- Work-from-home setups
- Gamers
- 4K/8K streaming
- Households with many connected devices
Performance varies by device — not every device will see the full plan speed, especially over Wi-Fi — but the increased headroom creates smoother performance across the entire home.
Quick Tips to Improve Wi-Fi Performance
Place your router high, open, and central
Avoid cupboards, behind TVs, or under furniture
Restart occasionally
Update device OS and Wi-Fi drivers
Use Ethernet for performance-critical devices Add mesh for long or multi-level homes
Ensure devices support modern Wi-Fi standards
Troubleshooting Checklist
Before Contacting Support:
Are you connected to a modern Wi-Fi network (6E/7)?
How far are you from the router?
Are other devices using bandwidth heavily?
Have you tried Ethernet to isolate Wi-Fi?
Are background updates running?
What You Need to Reach HyperNet Speeds
HyperNet brings massive bandwidth to your ONT — but for your devices to see multi-gigabit speeds, every link in the chain must support it.
Below is a clear explanation of the required equipment.
Device Requirements
Laptops & Desktops (Ethernet)
To see speeds above 1Gbps, your device typically needs:
- 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps Ethernet port, OR
- A USB-C → 2.5Gbps Ethernet adapter
Typical device limits:
- Standard laptops (1Gbps LAN) → ~940Mbps max
- High-end laptops with 2.5Gbps adapters → ~1500–2500 Mbps (varies by device)
Laptops, Mobiles, Tablets (Wi-Fi)
Wi-Fi 7 devices
- Capable of multi-gig speeds in ideal conditions
- Require a Wi-Fi 7 router
Wi-Fi 6/6E devices
- Typically 500–1200 Mbps in real-world conditions
- Often below multi-gig range
Wi-Fi 5 and older
- 100–500 Mbps typical
Not all devices will reach HyperNet speeds —
but they will benefit from improved stability
and reduced congestion.
TVs, Consoles, Smart Devices
- Smart TVs: typically 50–300 Mbps
- Consoles (PS5/Xbox): 100–400 Mbps
- IoT devices: 5–20 Mbps
These devices do not need multi-gig performance and will not reach it.
Router Requirements
Your router should support:
✔ 10G or 2.5G WAN port
Allows your router to accept HyperNet speeds.
✔ 2.5G LAN ports
Required for wired multi-gig devices.
✔ Wi-Fi 7 (recommended)
For improved wireless performance with compatible devices.
360Net Router Offering
HyperNet plans can be paired with 360Net-provided Wi-Fi 7 routers that support multi-gigabit throughput where device hardware allows.
ONT Requirements
A Hyperfibre-capable ONT is required. Your Local Fibre Company (Chorus, Enable, Northpower, UFF) will:
- Upgrade your ONT if needed
- Perform required provisioning
- Activate the appropriate port
360Net handles this process behind the scenes during your HyperNet order.
Realistic Expectations
- Wi-Fi rarely reaches full plan speed – this is normal
- Ethernet provides the highest, most consistent performance
- Devices vary widely in maximum achievable speed
- HyperNet’s biggest advantage is capacity, consistency, and future-proofing
- Households see smoother performance across all devices, even if individual devices do not hit multi-gig speeds
When Should You Upgrade Your Plan?
Upgrade if:
- You have 20–50+ devices
- You work-from-home daily
- Multiple people stream or game simultaneously
- You need higher upload performance
- You want a future-proof network for new Wi-Fi 7/8 devices
